Chiba, Japan Tour 2009 - October 14-21
To help mark the 40th anniversary of the City of North Vancouver’s sister-city relationship with Chiba City, 17 North Shore musicians from Lions Gate Sinfonia and Laudate Singers traveled to Japan to showcase Canadian music. Performances at Sen City Tower and in collaboration with Japan’s Makuhari Philharmonic Orchestra and Karatachi Choir at Chiba Civic Hall were highlights. Much fun was had as well performing for and with students at Inagi Middle and High School.
The Chiba government-sponsored music festival bore all costs and were exceptional hosts. A good time was enjoyed by all participants. The program included traditional Japanese arrangements of Japanese folk songs and an arrangement of Eric Satie’s “Le Fils des E’toiles” by Toru Takemitsu. Canadian representation by Steve Chatman included “Prairie Lullaby” orchestrated by Music Director Clyde Mitchell and “Mountains” by Michael Conway Baker. A highlight was the world-premiere of “Raven” for choir and orchestra, by north shore resident composer Bruce Sled.
